Family Fishing on the
Trinity River
Panfish Near Midway, TX

No size limits, no bag limits, fast action, and they'll bite a cricket every time. Bluegill, warmouth, and redear sunfish are the perfect introduction to river fishing — and the Trinity has plenty of them.

Why Panfish Are the Perfect Family Fish

Catfish and bass get all the attention on the Trinity, but panfish are arguably the most important fish for anyone bringing kids or new anglers to the water. Here's why:

🎣
Fast Action

Panfish bite frequently. Kids don't sit and wait — they need bites to stay engaged. Bluegill deliver.

🪱
Simple Tackle

A cane pole or light spinning rod, a small hook, a split shot, and a cricket. That's the entire setup.

📋
No Limits

Bluegill, warmouth, and most sunfish species have no size limit and no daily bag limit in Texas.

Species You'll Catch

Blue-
gill
Bluegill

The most common panfish on the Trinity. They're everywhere in shallow, weedy, or woody cover. A cricket or small nightcrawler piece dropped into 2–4 feet of water near any bank cover will find them. No limit, no minimum size.

War-
mouth
Warmouth

Chunky, aggressive panfish that prefer shallow water with heavy cover — lily pads, wood, overhanging vegetation. They'll hit small lures as readily as live bait, which makes them fun on ultralight gear. No limit, no minimum size.

Redear
Redear Sunfish (Shellcracker)

Larger than bluegill on average and excellent on the table. Prefer slower backwater areas with softer bottom. They'll take a worm or cricket on the bottom more readily than under a float. No limit, no minimum size.

Best Spots for Families

The best bank-fishing for panfish near Coleman's is in the shallow cover along the banks — particularly anywhere with fallen timber, overhanging vegetation, or a soft mud bottom in 2–5 feet of water. From a boat, the backwater pockets off the main channel are ideal.

Simple Setup for Kids

The Classic Setup
  • • Size 8 or 10 light wire hook
  • • 1 or 2 small split shot sinkers
  • • Small foam or clip float, set 2–3 feet deep
  • • 6 lb monofilament line
Best Baits
  • • Crickets — the number one panfish bait in Texas
  • • Nightcrawlers cut into small pieces
  • • Mealworms — great for kids to handle
  • • Small wax worms in cooler months

Cleaning Small Panfish

Panfish are genuinely excellent table fare — light, mild, and easy to cook. Smaller fish (under 6 inches) can be scaled, gutted, and cooked whole. Larger bluegill and redear fillet cleanly with a sharp flexible knife.

Cook to an internal temperature of 145°F or until flesh is opaque and flakes with a fork. No specific consumption advisory applies to panfish from this area, but as with all fish, moderation is sensible.
