Trinity River
White Bass Run
Near Midway, TX

The best single-day action on the Trinity happens in late winter and early spring when white bass push upstream. When the run is on, limits of 25 fish are realistic. Here's how to be there when it happens.

The Run: What It Is and Why It Matters

White bass are a schooling, migratory species. In late winter and early spring — typically late February through April near Midway — white bass push out of Lake Livingston and move upstream through the Trinity River system on a spawning run. When they're moving, they stack up at current breaks, creek mouths, and shallow riffles in numbers that can produce fast, non-stop action.

This isn't the kind of fishing where you sit and wait. White bass on the run are aggressive, schooling fish. When you find them, you can catch a limit in an hour. When you're not on them, you may not get a bite. Understanding the timing and the locations is everything.

When Does the Run Start?

Timing depends on water temperature and current conditions more than the calendar. In a normal year near Midway, the run builds through February and peaks in March. But an early warm spell can jump-start it in late January, and a cold winter can push it into April. The triggers are:

Water Temperature

White bass begin moving when water temps reach the upper 50s°F and run hard through the low-to-mid 60s. When temp drops back down, the run pauses.

Rising Water

A rise in the river — even a modest one — often triggers upstream movement. Fish time their push with current increases that carry them upstream.

Time of Year

Late February through early April is the window at this latitude. Check local fishing reports in late January to know if the run is early or late in a given year.

Where to Fish: Current Seams, Creek Mouths & Sandbars

White bass congregate where current is present but fishable. They're not sitting in the slowest water, and they're not fighting the fastest current. They want the seam — the transition between fast and slow water — where they can hold and ambush prey without burning energy.

Best Lures & Live Bait

Lures That Work
  • Small white or chartreuse jigs (1/4–3/8 oz) — the go-to. Twitch them in current seams and count down to different depths until you find the fish.
  • Small swimbaits in shad profile — any 2–3" paddle tail in silver/white matches the forage.
  • Inline spinners like a Rooster Tail or Blue Fox in white or silver — simple and effective, especially on a slow drift.
  • Small jigging spoons — drop straight down off sandbars and schooling fish below the surface.
Live & Natural Bait
  • Live minnows under a float — deadly, especially when fish are holding in slower water early and late in the run.
  • Small shiners on a light jig head — fish it through current seams with a slow hop retrieve.
  • Light line matters: 6–10 lb monofilament or fluorocarbon. White bass can be line-shy in clear conditions.
